Shugborough Estate, Staffordshire (National Trust)

So it’s been absolute ages since we actually made use of our National Trust membership since the arrival of Baby H made things quite difficult for us to go out and about in the cold weather (she doesn’t like the cold like her mummy). However it’s now mild enough that we feel comfortable heading out! We decided on a day out at Shugborough. We’d been back in August 2010 when it was being managed by the Council so it looked quite different back then.

The drive up to the heart of the estate is quite a long one as it’s a very large estate. We parked up on the grass and walked over to the Ticket Office where you purchase your entry tickets (free of charge for members). The ticket pays for entry to the whole site although parking is free.

There is a farm and walled garden almost immediately after the Ticket Office. As it’s spring there were quite a number of lambs in residence in the farm!

The walk to the mansion, Lichfield Apartments, servants’ quarters, shop and tea room takes approximately 20 minutes from the Ticket Office. They offer a buggy service on request (I believe) but are unable to take push chairs on the service. Also there are a lot of stairs up to the mansion so it might be difficult to take a push chair up into the building. We used a baby carrier for convenience.

The Lichfield Apartments are available to visit in specific time slots which you have to book upon arrival. Unfortunately they were all full by the time we got there on Sunday afternoon so we’ll have to visit again in the future.

There are changing facilities available in a separate room at the women’s toilets near the tea room/shop as well as near the park farm cafe.

There are several structures in the grounds and the landscape is full of flowers and trees and it is a lovely place to walk through and enjoy.

It’s definitely one to visit and a great place to bring your kids.
