We went to The Wheatsheaf a few Sundays ago to have a pre-Christmas meal with some friends and their families. Our friends had been and they really like it there so we gave it a go.
We arrived a little late (punctuality doesn’t work as new parents with a newborn..) so our friends had already been seated by the time we got there. However they were unable to tell us where our table is as apparently there were issues with their booking system. I had to ring our friends to try and find them. We were seated in the back and fairly out of the way.
Orders were taken for drinks and food fairly promptly after we were sat down. It didn’t take too long for the food to arrive which was good. We ordered the Atlantic Prawn Cocktail, Stilton & Peppercorn Mushrooms, Gourmet Beef Burger, Trio of Roasts, Kentish Bramley Apple & Blackberry Crumble Pie and Salted Caramel Sundae.
I’ve got to say we were sorely disappointed by the portion of the Stilton & Peppercorn Mushrooms. As you can see by the photo it looked quite pathetic sat on such a large plate. My husband finished it in 2 bites which is not what you want from a starter. I think they seriously need to rethink the portion size as it wasn’t very good value for money. Otherwise the food in general was quite good.
Service in general was fairly decent aside from after we’d had the dessert menus. Nobody came back to our table to take our dessert orders which meant one of our party had to go look for a member of staff. Not great if your customers have to go and get you for some service. I’m hoping this was just a blip.
So aside from these little niggles our visit to The Wheatsheaf was fairly decent and we wouldn’t mind visiting again in the hopes that it would be better than this recent visit.
