Green Kitchen Cakes, Long Eaton

I found Green Kitchen Cakes when we were at that very first wedding fair at Holme Pierrepont Hall in 2013. It was that momentous day that we met the lovely Laura who owns Green Kitchen Cakes, a bespoke cake business. She had some samples of her cakes at her stall and it was her fantastic lime sponge cake that caught our attention.

That lime sponge made such an impression on me that I got in touch with her shortly after the wedding fair to arrange a consultation and a tasting session. She’s based in Long Eaton so it wasn’t far for us to go where she welcomed us with 4 types of cake which we’d decided on beforehand. My mother in law came with us for the testing.

Laura was very welcoming and friendly and immediately put us at ease. After offering us hot drinks and having a bit of a chat we commenced with the tasting!

As we’d already tried the lime cake we’d decided on trying the following flavours:
– Vanilla Sponge
– Chocolate
– Carrot
– Rich Fruit Cake

Each cake was delicious and it made our decision quite difficult. I was adamant I wanted one of the tiers to be the lime sponge so that left the other tiers up for discussion.

As neither of us knew how big a cake or how many tiers we wanted, we were left at quite a loss. We also had to take into account the fact that we wanted our top tier to be a fruit cake (so we could store it in keeping with the tradition that the top tier of our wedding cake be saved to eat at (a) our 1st wedding anniversary or (b) the christening of our first born). However, Laura was able to suggest all this based on the number of guests we were inviting. We decided on a 3 tier cake with the following tiers:

Top tier        : Fruit Cake
Middle tier  : Carrot Cake
Bottom tier : Lime Sponge Cake

We then had to decide on a design for the cake. Again as we were woefully unprepared in terms of ideas for this, we threw some ideas out there and Laura said she’d prepare a sketch of our design. Even though we kept changing our ideas (we’d booked Laura more than a year in advance) she never once said she couldn’t do something. She was helpful, easily contactable  and very professional.

her sketch – we’d originally wanted Owl Cake Toppers but we decided on a Double Happiness Cake Topper in the end as you shall see from photos below

Our final product was a beautiful wedding cake!

For our wedding day, Laura also made us a birthday cake for one of our guests who had her 30th birthday on our wedding day! This was a chocolate cake and was made to the same high standard we’d come to expect from Laura.

Even before our wedding day we had 2 non-wedding cakes from Laura.

My mother in law turned 60 in October 2014. She was so impressed by Laura at our initial meeting that she’d booked with Laura to make her birthday cake. That was a lime sponge cake.

My husband then turned 30 just before our wedding and I threw him a surprise birthday party. For the occasion I asked Laura to make a carrot cake for him. For the design I tried to incorporate things from his life and interests. I wasn’t sure how to do that so when I asked Laura for some advice she said she could actually print photos/pictures onto a cake! This was a brilliant idea and the finished product was more than I could have hoped for! Laura was also incredibly accommodating by agreeing to deliver the cake to me as I had no way of getting to her to collect the cake without alerting my husband to the subterfuge!
